Who We Are

Fort Mose was the northern defense of St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city and the first free black settlement of North America.

The Fort Mose Historical Society is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and interpreting African American history. This remarkable story of courage, determination, and survival was only rediscovered in the last couple of decades through the hard work and leadership of dedicated and committed partnerships of citizens, political leaders, and scholars.

Their combined efforts led to the establishment of Fort Mose Historic State Park in 1989, the founding of the Fort Mose Historical Society in 1996, and the Fort Mose Visitors Center and Museum in 2008.

Ultimately, our goal is to construct a representation of the 1738 fortification at Fort Mose State Park.

What We Do

We have four (4), major annual living history programs:

  • Flight to Freedom - February 8-10
  • Castillo by Candlelight - February 17
  • Founding of Fort Mose - March 17
  • Battle of Bloody Mose - June 16
  • Harvest Time - November 10

Actors dress in colonial militia and civilian clothing. Flint-lock muskets and canons are fired. These living history programs are performed by volunteers. Fort Mose Historical Society appreciates all of the volunteers that make our living history programs a success.  Come be a part of preserving history.
