Volunteer: DIY: Refugee Welcome Kits

REFUGEE WELCOME KITS

Please be sure to acknowledge the DIY and Kit Projects Volunteer Waiver and follow the directions carefully.

WHAT TO DO:

You or your team will host a drive or purchase the supplies, complete the project, and drop off the completed project to the appropriate location. You may log your hours through the self-log feature of your profile after registering for the event and completing your project.

You can download a list of possible kits to make by clicking here or check out our Amazon wish list here.

If you would like to hold a drive, you can find some helpful tips HERE.

More helpful tips for completing DIY projects can be found HERE.

For anyone collecting service hours, we will grant one half-hour plus one hour per every two kits created.

Kits must contain EVERY item listed and be in a decorated bag with a decorated card to receive full service hours.

When finished, contact our project coordinator here to let them know how many kits you have and to coordinate drop-offs. Please note: due to the limited staff capacity of our team and our partners, it may take 3-5 days to respond and coordinate delivery.

WHY THIS KIT:

Did you know that Jacksonville ranks in the top 100 U.S. cities for refugee resettlement?

https://www.wusf.org/news/2020-02-27/six-florida-cities-rank-in-top-100-for-refugee-resettlement

Having fled the danger of their home countries and languishing in limbo for months--or even years--refugees enter the United States with next to nothing. Help restart their household by providing Welcome Kits with everything a family needs to begin their new life in safety in Northeast Florida.

DIY Volunteering allows families and groups of all ages and sizes to participate in flexible and meaningful community service opportunities from the comfort of their own homes or offices. DIY projects can be combined with social events, business meetings, celebrations, and more. Purchasing items or hosting a drive and assembling personal care kits are a critical way volunteers can address a real community need individually or as a group, family, school or neighborhood.

Volunteer: Self-Led Beach Clean-up - Jax Beach Pier

DIY Volunteering Made Easy
Start your project with these quick steps:

• Create your profile on the Volunteer Hub if you don’t have one yet
• Respond to the volunteer need you want to support
• Complete the required waiver before beginning
• Log your hours using the self reporting tool after you finish

Beach Clean Up Guidelines

Directions
Jacksonville Beach Pier
303 N 1st Street
Jacksonville Beach FL 32250

Google Maps link available upon request

Parking

There is plenty of parking at the pier. Parking is free Monday through Friday, with a small fee on weekends. Early morning cleanups are usually not affected. Dress for the weather and bring gloves, trash bags, sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water. You can volunteer solo or as part of a team.

Where to clean up
You can collect trash anywhere on the sand, around the walkways, under the pier, along the main boardwalk, in the pier parking lot, and in nearby city parks on the beach including the amphitheater.

Where not to clean up
Avoid stepping into the dunes, as this causes erosion. If you can safely reach an item without entering the dunes, feel free to pick it up.
If you encounter hazardous trash, handle it carefully or skip it entirely. Place any hazardous waste you do pick up in a sealed container using a tool to avoid direct contact. Never pick up needles or broken glass with your hands.

Consolidating trash and recycling
Bring everyone together about fifteen minutes before your end time to look through what was collected and consolidate smaller bags into larger ones.
If you want to separate recyclables like plastic bottles, you are welcome to do so, but there are no recycling bins on the beach. You will need to take recyclables home or to a local facility.

Where to place your trash bags
Place your tied trash bags next to any city trash can near the beach clocks. Do not place bags inside the cans. The city prefers them beside the cans for easier pickup and to avoid overflowing the containers.

Volunteer hours

Your hours will be verified using your self reported entry and the photos you send. Hours are awarded one to one, with a maximum of three per day. Please log your time through the self reporting tool in your Volunteer Hub profile.

Notes
Volunteers do not all need large bags. Smaller bags are fine for cigarette butts and small debris.
These cleanup instructions work for any beach or public waterway access point in Duval County.

For teams
You may choose the date and time that works best for your group. Be mindful of weekend parking fees.
The organizer should register on the Volunteer Hub and create a team for their event.
Encourage participants to create their own Volunteer Hub profiles so they can explore more opportunities in the community.

After your cleanup, email Volunteer@uwnefl.org with:
• Photos
• Full names of participants
• Date and times of your cleanup

Be sure to log your hours before emailing, as we verify them once your message is received. Please keep in mind that our team is small and often out in the community, so we ask for three to five business days to respond and approve hours.

We will verify hours for all participants based on the information provided and can prepare a recognition letter for your team.

Volunteer: Meeting Space

CUTS is currently in the process of looking to purchase a building as our "clubhouse" but in the meantime, we need a reliable space to meet with our young men.  This space would need to accommodate between 10-15 people and have access to a restroom.  We would love to have this space donated to us since we are a donation based not for profit group.

We meet 2-3 times a month for a few hours.  Some of our meetings are held outdoors or at a public place.  The indoor meetings that we need this space for are when we meet with the group members and/or their parents/guardians to complete our curriculum or other projects.

Just about any area of town is acceptable but most of our group members live in and around the Northside of Jacksonville.

Low income parents must often choose between buying diapers for their child or buying food. Now image,  if you were a teen mom.

A healthy change of diapers can cost over $100 per month. Safety Net programs such as, WIC Food Stamps, and Medicaid do not pay for or provide diapers.

Using a soiled diaper for a long period of time results in increased illness.

Please contact Jordan Whitmarsh for donation pick up at 904-588-5989 or beachesylvs@yahoo.com.

For anyone collecting hours, we will verify one half-hour plus one hour for every one kit of a package of diapers, two packages of wipes and a tube of diaper cream, awarded to one participant.

Volunteer: DIY: C.R.O.W.N. Hair Care Kits

C.R.O.W.N. HAIR CARE KITS

C.R.O.W.N. stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.

Please be sure to acknowledge the DIY and Kit Projects Volunteer Waiver and follow the directions carefully.

WHAT TO DO:

Download instructions for making C.R.O.W.N. Hair Care Kits HERE.

You or your team will host a drive or purchase the supplies, complete the project, and drop off the completed project to the appropriate location. You may log your hours through the self-log feature of your profile after registering for the event and completing your project. Once you have responded to this need United Way of Northeast Florida will contact you within 48 hours.

If you would like to hold a drive, you can find some helpful tips HERE.

If you need community service hours, we will verify one half-hour plus one hour for every two kits with cards created.

Kits must contain EVERY item listed and be in a decorated bag with a decorated card to receive full service hours.

When finished, contact us HERE to let us know how many kits you have, and we will coordinate with the recipient organization for your drop off. Be aware that this can take 3-5 days.

WHY THIS KIT:

Natural hair care items are frequently overlooked when toiletry items are donated. Not all hair and skincare products meet the unique needs of the natural hair community, and many homeless service providers have difficulty providing these necessary items. Many students from struggling families within our school system have a great need for these seldom-donated products as well.

The is one of our DIY (Do it Yourself Volunteer Projects). DIY Volunteering allows families and groups of all ages and sizes to participate in flexible and meaningful community service opportunities from the comfort of their own homes or offices. DIY projects can be combined with social events, business meetings, celebrations, and more.

Kits will be dispersed to our Full Service Schools network to be distributed to students or through other non-profit partner agencies that serve the homeless or veteran populations.

We maintain a food pantry to help assist our guests who may be struggling financially. The holidays can be an especially stressful time financially for our guests. It would be wonderful for groups to organize supply drives to stock our panty for the coming year.

This is a project that can be done by anyone, anywhere! This is the perfect opportunity to get the whole family involved in collecting supplies for Gabriel House of Care.

Supplies needed:

Pantry items:

Shelf stable jello cups

Oatmeal packets

Canned tuna

Assorted canned soups

saltine crackers

Individual bags of chips

Volunteer: Max Block Food Pantry Food Drive

Food Donation Drive for the Max Block Food Pantry at Jewish Family & Community Services.

JFCS strengthens the entire First Coast community by providing high-quality, responsive, timely wraparound services to enhance the lives of children, adults, seniors and families coping with challenges that arise throughout the life cycle. Through the onsite emergency food pantry (our Max Block Food Pantry), JFCS actively leads the fight against hunger.

The pantry is a LIFELINE for over 8,000 people each year facing a crisis, helping to nourish and stabilize them so that they can satisfy their most basic human need of nutrition. Children cannot focus in the classroom when they are hungry and worried where their next meal will come from. Families cannot focus on higher level issues such as goal setting, nurturing parenting, safety and self-sufficiency when they are battling extreme hunger and malnutrition. Seniors cannot maintain their health when forced to choose between prescriptions or food. By helping individuals and families satisfy their most basic human need, the pantry is a core service that we "wrap" around at-risk families, often supplementing other services that we are providing in the home or in the school. It helps stabilize families so they are better prepared when a crisis hits.

It is so important to keep the Max Block Food Pantry stocked with non-perishable food (canned meat, soup, stew, fruit, veggies, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, rice, pasta, etc) for these reasons. It is especially important during the summer months. One of the most telling statistics is that one in five school age children have their only meals while in school. School gets out in early June usually and many of them do not have food at home to eat, so they go hungry. A stocked pantry allows JFCS to partner with various summer camps and other non-profit agencies to ensure these children receive the food and nutrition they need to get though the summer.

This is an ongoing need throughout the year. Help us help over 60,000 people in 2018.

Volunteer: COVID-19 Emergency Food Drive - Our Redeemer Lutheran Church

The coronavirus has closed schools and most community centers, creating a gap in meals for children. Seniors, people with chronic conditions, and those with compromised immune systems face higher risks in public spaces — forcing many to remain at home. Working families who can barely make ends meet now simply cannot absorb any added expenses this pandemic has caused and are the most likely to be affected as concerns over layoffs are now a reality. Please help us help the people in our community by donating non-perishable food (canned meat, soup, stew, fruit, veggies, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, rice, pasta, etc) for these reasons. Please no meat or fresh fruits and vegetables. To drop off donations, contact Pastor Bill at revbillreister@aol.com or 904-766-4728. 1 volunteer hour for every 10 items donated will be given.

Safety First

Safety is paramount! Please read and follow these precautions before beginning this volunteer project:

Do not purchase items or prepare care packages if anyone in your household is sick When packaging goods, wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face Donated items must be unopened, new, and not expired

Volunteer: Alleviate Child Hunger in the Eastside

Alleviate Child Hunger in The Eastside

Many children within Duval County do not have regular access to food. As you can imagine, this instability has an impact on their health and academic success. Snack packs will alleviate some of their discomfort and worry that negatively affects their learning, social interactions, and ability to enjoy life as a child should. This is an opportunity to help the Historic Eastside Community Development Corporation address this barrier to success. This need was also created to aid families heavily affected by the pandemic.

Packs can be completed in three easy steps:

1) Decorate a blank paper bag. A bright, colorful bag can really cheer up a child of any age!

2) Stuff the bag with the following items (all items should be easy to open, non-perishable, and should need a microwave at most to cook):

Shelf-stable milk, chocolate milk, or 100% juice Easy Mac, Tuna Salad or chicken salad kit Kashi bar, Kind or another granola bar Popcorn/Chip Bag Applesauce or fruit cup Napkin Fork/spoon

3) Create a positive, motivational card for the child and place it in each bag.

4) When you have completed the project and are ready to donate your bags, please contact our project coordinator here.

Safety First

Safety is paramount! Please read and follow these precautions before beginning this volunteer project:

Do not purchase items or prepare care packages if anyone in your household is sick When packaging goods, wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face Donated items must be unopened, new, and not expired

Volunteer: Make a senior's day in Historic Eastside!

It may not be food, but these bags delivered to seniors receiving home-delivered meals and groceries in Jacksonville's Historic Eastside are still much-needed essential items. Senior Care Bags are assembled packages of items that seniors may find useful to make their daily life easier.  Bags should be reusable shopping bags, totes, or drawstring backpacks.

Welcome Bags can include a combination of six or more (but not limited to) of the following items:

Hand sanitizer (when available) 1-2 face mask Toothbrush and holder Toothpaste Washcloth Soap and holder Shampoo Body wash Comb or brush Facial tissues Lip balm Lotion Jar gripper Magnifying glass for reading Magazines Activity books (crosswords, sudoku, etc. Large print is preferred) Notepads Pens Sugar-free candy Box of tea Non-slip socks Decorated card of encouragement

Assembling these kits involves a few simple steps. First, create a card of encouragement to put inside the bag; write a positive message, or decorate it with an inspirational image. We recommend using cardstock so that it won't bend in the bag during transport. Then, one of each item and the card should be placed in the bag.

Volunteer: Collect food for the Historic Eastside CDC

Food Drive is one of our (DIY) Do it Yourself Volunteer Projects. DIY Volunteering allows families and groups of all ages and sizes to participate in flexible and meaningful community service opportunities from the comfort of their own homes or offices. DIY projects can be combined with social events, business meetings, celebrations, and more. You or your team will host a drive or purchase the supplies, complete the project, and drop off the completed project to the appropriate location. You may log your hours through the self log feature of your profile after registering for the event and completing your project. Once you have responded to this need you will be contacted by our project coordinator.

Food drives are a critical way volunteers can address real community needs individually or as a group, family, school, or neighborhood, especially now, during this critical time. Food items that you collect will benefit a family in need in Jacksonville's Historic Eastside neighborhood.

You can download an instructional document here which includes discussion questions and tips for holding a drive as well as a list of suggested items.  Most needed items are nonperishable food items, peanut butter, dried beans, rice, grains, pasta, sauces, canned items, 'add water' types of meals (dried rice and pasta dishes etc). When selecting items, please keep in mind that items that are too high in sodium are not good for anyone!

Volunteer: Antiracism Children's Book Drive!

Educator Alvin Irby concluded that "Children's literature represents one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in the fight against bigotry and racism in American culture." There's never been a more important time to ensure that all young minds have access to reading material that introduces and celebrates differences, features people of color in everyday situations, and even approaches difficult subjects such as racism with honesty.

Books can be scarce for many families, and books that are not white-focused are amongst the last donated. All books will be given to students through our partner agencies working with school-aged children in Northeast Florida.

You can help future generations come to a greater understanding of their world by donating one book, or many! Download a list of Antiracism children's literature by grade level here, or go straight to our Amazon Wishlists:

Books for Elementary School Books for Middle School Books for High School

When you are ready to make a donation, please contact our project coordinator here.

Encourage your networks to take action on HSUS alerts and priority policies. Recruit HSUS allies to continue expanding the diversity of our audiences, volunteers and the organization, and make the animal protection movement more inclusive for all. Humane Policy Volunteer Leaders commit to taking actions as directed by HSUS program staff and their state director, averaging one to three hours per week for one year (weekly time may vary). Ongoing participation after the first year is preferred.

Benefits of becoming a Humane Policy Volunteer Leader

The Humane Policy Volunteer Leader program is the first, largest and most effective animal protection policy volunteer program of its kind in the nation. HSUS volunteers are essential partners in our lifesaving work for all animals and are an integral part of this community of compassionate individuals, all of whom are deeply committed to advancing humane public policies for all animals.

Volunteer: Become a Caring Connector

We need great volunteers for our Caring Connections Telephone Reassurance Program!

ElderSource's Caring Connections Telephone Reassurance Program provides a friendly telephone call from a volunteer to an older adult who is living alone and/or homebound. The goal of the program is to eliminate or reduce some of the concerns facing homebound seniors: isolation, loneliness, depression, anxiety and cognitive decline.

Many older adults want to remain independent and age in place in their own homes; however because they are isolated or housebound, meaningful relationships are difficult to come by. Caring Connections volunteers will reach out by phone regularly to these seniors to offer a friendly check-in and an opportunity to feel connected to the community beyond their front door.

Want to Become a Caring Connections Volunteer?

This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for someone looking to make a difference in the life of a senior. All volunteers must:

Be willing to establish a friendly, caring relationship with seniors over the phone. Have great listening skills. Be willing to make a commitment to call a senior at least once a week for a minimum of six months to a year. Agree to a background screening and reference check. Attend orientation and training sessions. For more information on this program, or if you know a senior who could benefit from this program, please contact: Vanessa Boyer

Volunteer: Give a Song and a Smile!

Can you carry a tune? Are you good at noodling on the guitar? Do you have a French horn gathering dust in a closet? Why not share your love of music with others in a short video of a song? Music can be a wonderful way to share and communicate, as well as support emotional well being. Faster music can make you feel more alert and concentrate better. Upbeat music can make you feel more optimistic and positive about life. A slower tempo can quiet your mind and relax your muscles, making you feel soothed while releasing stress. Music can even stimulate memory in the elderly! Your song can be effective for relaxation and stress management for many vulnerable groups: children, the disabled, and seniors!

Just download the detailed instructions here to get started.

You will receive 1.5 volunteer hours upon completion of all the steps.

Volunteer: Alleviate Child Hunger in Full Service Schools

Alleviate Child Hunger in Full Service Schools

Many children within Duval County do not have regular access to food. As you can imagine, this instability has an impact on their health and academic success. Snack packs will alleviate some of their discomfort and worry that negatively affects their learning, social interactions, and ability to enjoy life as a child should. Packs can be completed in three easy steps:

1) Decorate a blank paper bag. A bright, colorful bag can really cheer up a child of any age!

2) Stuff the bag with the following items (all items should be easy to open, non-perishable, and should need a microwave at most to cook):

Shelf-stable milk, chocolate milk, or 100% juice Easy Mac, Tuna Salad or chicken salad kit Kashi bar, Kind or another granola bar Popcorn/Chip Bag Applesauce or fruit cup Napkin Fork/ spoon

3) Create a positive, motivational card for the child and place it in each bag.

4) When you have completed the project and are ready to donate your bags, please contact our project coordinator here.

Volunteer: First Generation College Starter Kits for Eastside Graduates

Many universities and colleges are now requiring freshmen to live on campus their first year. For those students that are the first in their family to ever go to college, this can be a daunting and completely unexpected expenditure. You can help offset a few of these expenses by putting together a dorm kit for these excited students!

You can download a list of supplies needed by clicking here or check out our Amazon wish list by clicking here.

First Generation College Starter Kits are one of our (DIY) Do it Yourself Volunteer Projects. DIY Volunteering allows families and groups of all ages and sizes to participate in flexible and meaningful community service opportunities from the comfort of their own homes or offices. DIY projects can be combined with social events, business meetings, celebrations, and more. You or your team will host a drive or purchase the supplies, complete the project, and drop off the completed project at the site. You may log your hours through the self log feature of your profile after registering for the event and completing your project.

United Way of Northeast Florida will help you coordinate the drop off of the completed kits. Just let us know when you have completed the kit(s).

For those needing project hours, we will give one half-hour plus five hours for each completed kit per one participant.

For any questions, please contact us here.

Volunteer: Sort clothing

The clothing ministry program of Presbyterian Social Ministries collects new and gently used clothing. Volunteers then come in and sort them by gender, size, type, and season. After they are sorted and boxed accordingly, we distribute them back out to direct-service partner agencies. Typical recipients are schools, churches, and a variety of other nonprofit agencies that give the clothes away directly to those in need.

Donated clothes require daily attention and volunteers are critical to keeping the process moving along smoothly.

We process over 300,000 articles of clothing per year, most of them new. Much of this success is driven by the volunteers that give their time throughout the year getting clothes ready for distribution.

 How to be prepared:

When volunteering, wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. Sometimes volunteers may be asked to lift some boxes. The clothes need to be sorted, sized, and grouped by gender and season and boxed up. Specific instructions will be given so you’ll know exactly what, where, and how to do the clothing. There is ice/water onsite and a refrigerator/microwave available to use should you like to bring a snack to eat while you’re here.

At this time, we can only accommodate small groups (more than two (2) people) with pre-approval. We are in greatest need of volunteers that can commit to a regular schedule. Time is flexible: come for 1-2-3 hours, all day, every other week - whatever suits your schedule and personal goal as the volunteer. Unfortunately, we are not open on weekends.

Minors are welcome when accompanied by adult supervision.

Work is indoors.

Work is episodic. Some days we may have a lot to sort through, other days we may have very little. We will inform you if there is not any need to come in if you are scheduled.

Please note: We will contact you before your first visit to confirm times and availability. Please do not arrive at our facility before a confirmation from us.

Thank you for considering our agency and we look forward to your visit.

Volunteer: Food Drive for Lutheran Social Services

There is currently an urgent need for food at Lutheran Social Service's Nourishment Network Market. Pantry usage was 17% higher in 2022 than in 2021.

Food drives are a critical way volunteers can address a real community needs individually or as a group, family, school or neighborhood. Food items that you collect will benefit a family in need through Lutheran Social Services.

Most needed items are nonperishable food items, peanut butter, canned meats, dried beans, rice, grains, pasta, sauces, canned vegetables, granola bars, 'add water' types of meals (dried rice and pasta dishes, etc.). When selecting items, please keep in mind that items that are too high in sodium are not good for anyone!

For guidance on what items to collect, United Way of Northeast Florida has created a chart of how much food it takes to feed a family. Please download this document and use it when creating a wish list or shopping list.

Drop off donations to our office at 4615 Philips Hwy, Jacksonville, FL 32207. Contact Nourish Network manager, James Perrigan, for coordinating large donations.

The LSS Nourishment Network food pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and additional hours on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

LSS encourages individuals to deliver food donations when the food pantry is closed in order for staff to assist

United Way can document community service hours for those that need them and will give one hour for every 15 items donated. One item counts as each package donated: one can of soup is one item and a six count package of apple sauce is one item. Just contact us here with questions.

Brighten the day of a Pine Castle client!

You can brighten the day of an individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities! Make a card for a client participating in programs at Pine Castle and share a little sunshine with them. To learn more about Pine Castle and their programs, please visit their website.

Create a card with cardstock. You can decorate it using crayons, colored pencils, pens, etc. Draw a picture, write a positive quote, write a poem, or glue on one of these images. Be creative as long as it's encouraging and positive!

Guidelines for cards:

Exclude the date so it never feels old Write large and legibly Avoid any religious references as you will not know the faith of the recipient Use positive messaging focusing on happiness Avoid any suggestion that the recipient's situation needs improving such as "feel better" or "cheer up" Avoid hurtful language; write the card as if you were addressing your best friend or a loved one Avoid passive, victim words and do not refer to a specific condition Do not use the word "special"

When the cards are ready for donation, please contact the project's coordinator to arrange a drop-off date or to receive the mailing address. United Way of Northeast Florida will verify one volunteer hour for every five handmade (not printed) cards created up to 8 hours. We would also be happy to provide a volunteer verification document if needed.

Volunteer: Giving to The Giving Closet Project

Working to break the cycle of poverty.

At heart, all students want stability and love — but poverty makes it difficult for them to get something as simple as their basic needs met. This leaves them feeling ashamed and hopeless among their peers.

Children in the richest country in the world shouldn’t have to go without basic necessities like food, clean clothes, and hygiene products.

Students who need assistance are referred by the school district or school staff or by social service agencies. The Giving Closet Project creates a custom care kit based on the individual student's needs. Within a week, the care package is discretely delivered to the student, helping them feel seen and supported.

Of critical need, The Giving Closet Project is always in need of these hygiene items:

Black hair care items Wide-toothed comb Shampoo (sulfate-free, alcohol-free, and PH balanced) Shampoo Leave-in conditioner Conditioner Hair oil Styling Gel/Curl-defining Product Shower caps or satin bonnet Spray bottle Soap Lotion Deodorant Toothbrushes Toothpaste (travel and full size items)

Also, to support students' needs, the following items are in demand:

New socks and underwear (ALL sizes as we serve PreK-12th) Backpacks (clear and mesh for middle- and high school)

TGCP encourages individuals to deliver donations when the center is open for staff to assist. Contact TGCP here to arrange drop-off.

United Way can document community service hours for those who need them and will give one hour for every 15 items donated. Just contact us here.

Volunteer: Share Knowledge, Connections, and Resources with Students on the Social Platform for Social Mobility

Only 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that.

Here's how:

1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores.

2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.)

3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support.

4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people.

5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. It's a great choice for those looking to offer low-lift, relationship-driven support.

Best way to see how convenient and rewarding being a backr really is? Give it a try, commitment-free:

Or get the Backrs mobile app: Apple App Store or Google Play Store

Our Impact Model

Research shows that cross-class relationships are the biggest predictors of social mobility. And financial margin increases the odds of college persistence four-fold.

We partner with schools and youth organizations to recruit committed high school and college students into our community. Then, by removing the barriers the keep well-resourced adults from connecting with under-resourced young people, our technology builds bridges across socioeconomic strata, enabling people like you to empower students like Diego R.

Diego R. joined Backrs so he could pursue his dream of becoming a biomedical engineer. Thanks to his talent, hard work, and the support he's received from his backrs, he's well on his way to making that dream a reality. As he explained:

"My brother was born with Chronic Kidney Disease. He’s the man who gives me the strength to pursue Biomedical Engineering and become an accomplished technician. I strive to make the lives of those who suffer like him better. I want to be the change he needs to be healthy."

All of the students in our community are driven to build a better world; when they're given the resources to do so, everyone around them benefits.

The Backrs Experience

Being a great backr isn’t about grand gestures or having all the answers. It’s about the small things: sharing a word of encouragement. Passing along a helpful resource. Making an introduction. These actions make a big difference--take it from some of our current backrs:

"As a backr, I love the opportunity to support and mentor my three proteges as they grow and develop. I feel grateful to be able to guide and shape their future in a positive way. Through Backrs, I have been able to watch them grow into confident and capable individuals, and it has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I can't put into words. It's made a tremendous difference in my life to see them achieve their goals and know that I played a role in helping them get there."

- Ahmed Dawood, Marketer at Apple

"Backrs gives me an opportunity to utilize my expertise to provide mentoring and support to students. Even though my students are a couple time zones away, I have the flexibility to connect with them on my time and have been dedicated to checking my app weekly at minimum to engage in conversations and answer questions. Its exciting to celebrate their wins and talk about future plans. Mentoring was very impactful in my life so it gives me joy to give back in this way."

- Lori Hunt, College Provost

Stage Aurora Theatrical Company, Inc., theatre that enlightens, launched its Mainstage of Theatre, Dance, and Music in 2000 under the leadership of Darryl Reuben Hall. Stage Aurora began as an opportunity to provide the underserved community of Jacksonville’s Northside with professional theatre reflecting the Black experience. And now, Stage Aurora works have been performed nationally in various states. We aim to build bridges of understanding between cultures in relation to the human experience.

The Main Stage has produced 200+ productions including Pulitzer Prize Winners The Color Purple, Fences, Driving Miss Daisy, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Piano Lesson; and Tony Award Winners For Colored Girls Who..., Dreamgirls, The Wiz, and A Raisin in the Sun. Other favorites include Steel Magnolias, Crowns, Miss Ever's Boys, Mama, I Want to Sing, and Disney's High School Musical.

Since its inception, most grants that were awarded to Stage Aurora were  written by one person.  Therefore, help in the area of grant writing, is urgently needed and would be highly appreciated.
