Step into Jacksonville's past by joining us in a meaningful cleanup effort at the Old City Cemetery established in 1852. As the largest graveyard in Duval County established before 1880, it's a sprawling testament to Jacksonville's history, and unusual as it contains the graves of both Confederate veterans and heroes of the Union Army's United States Colored Troops.
Old City Cemetery is an important cemetery for Jacksonville’s African-American History. It reflects the stark reality of our past as it was racially segregated; but as home to the Duval Colored Cemetery and the "Freedmen's Cemetery," it embraces the legacies of many prominent African-American families, including Eartha White and other historically significant individuals from Eastside and beyond. It will be these areas that we will need volunteers to rake, remove debris, and clean.
