JWJ BDay 5K and Block Party

Description

Walk in the footsteps of history, then dance in celebration of a civil rights hero who shaped American culture. A day of community, commemoration, and joy!

Runners and walkers of all ages will set off from James Weldon Johnson Park and wind through the historic LaVilla neighborhood where the Johnson family once called home. Stories of his remarkable life will be shared in the “Along This Way Race Route”, meant to be run or walked at a “Party Pace” to enjoy interactive stations. The journey ends where it began – back at the Park – with a joyful Block Party featuring food trucks, games, champagne, DJ Rance Adams, and cupcakes courtesy of Noted Marketing.

Every dollar raised goes directly to the Friends of James Weldon Johnson Park, the City’s nonprofit partner devoted to preserving Jacksonville’s oldest and most treasured park.

All volunteers will receive pom poms or a noisemaker to cheer on race participants along the route!

We are seeking volunteers to cheer on 5K participants and provide assistance at water stations along the route.  These stations will have optional activities for 5K participants to engage with -- check out some of our opportunities below!

  • Cheer and Water Station #1: Passing the Florida Bar
At this station near Historic Stanton, racers will have the chance to limbo!  This represents James Weldon Johnson's success as the first African American to pass Florida's bar exam!
  • Cheer and Water Station #2: Postcards from Venezuela and Nicaragua
This station will feature giant postcards and salsa dancing, to celebrate James Weldon Johnson's time as the US consul for Venezuela and Nicaragua. Encourage racers to sign the back of one of our giant postcards documenting their participation in the race!
  • Cheer and Water Station #3: Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing
Here at LEVS Park, racers will have the opportunity to enjoy a live performance of James Weldon Johnson’s Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing by local artist Joe Watts before continuing to the finish line!
  • Finish Line Cheer Squad
Congratulate race participants as they finish the 5K and direct them to their celebratory champagne and cupcake!
  • Event Games and Activities
Bring the fun to JWJ Park events! Volunteers in this role help set up and run games, crafts, and other activities for guests of all ages. You’ll encourage participation, explain rules, and keep things organized and upbeat.
