Who We Are
Established in 2002, 9/11 Day was founded by David Paine and Jay Winuk to transform the anniversary of September 11 into a day of service, compassion, and unity. After losing his brother, Glenn Winuk, an attorney and volunteer firefighter who died while helping others at the World Trade Center, Jay and David asked themselves how to honor such an immense loss. Their answer was simple: "Take back the day" by turning it into a day of doing good in tribute to those who were lost and all who served in the aftermath. Today, 9/11 Day is the nation's largest annual day of service, inspiring millions of Americans to perform acts of kindness and volunteer in their communities.
What We Do
We transform the anniversary of September 11 into a nationwide day of service, compassion, and unity. Through volunteer projects such as meal-packing events, we bring people together to honor those who were lost, those who served, and those who responded in the aftermath. Our goal is to “take back the day” by encouraging millions of Americans to perform acts of kindness and make a positive difference in their communities.
